E44 on an Electrolux front-load washer means the control board is not receiving a valid door-closed signal, even though the door looks shut. That single description covers five related codes — E41, E42, E44, E45, E46 and E49 — that all live in the same door-sensing circuit but point at different failures inside it. Mixing them up is the single fastest way to replace the wrong part on this machine.
What does the E44 error mean on an Electrolux washer?
E44 means the washer’s control board is not getting a consistent door-closed reading through the sensing circuit, so it will not start or continue a cycle. It is not the same fault as a door that will not latch mechanically. The door can close and lock normally and the machine can still throw E44, because the fault sits in how the closed state is reported, not in whether the door is physically shut.
On most Electrolux front-load washers this shows up mid-cycle or at start-up, with the drum stopped, the door light off or flashing, and no error text beyond the code itself. The washer treats the ambiguous signal as unsafe to run on, which is the correct response — a door the control cannot confirm is closed is a door it will not spin or heat against.
How is E44 different from E41, E42, E45, E46 and E49?
All six codes belong to the same family because they all report a problem somewhere between the door switch and the control board reading it, but each one names a different link in that chain:
- E41 is the broadest: no closed signal is arriving at all, which usually points to the switch itself rather than the wiring or the lock motor.
- E42 is about the lock device — the motorized latch that secures the door for a spin cycle — reporting a failure that is separate from whether the door switch itself sees a closed door.
- E44 is the sensing path in general: the signal exists but is not reliable enough for the control to trust.
- E45 narrows the same idea to the wiring line specifically, rather than the switch or the control board’s input.
- E46 is about commands, not sensing: the control asked the lock to do something and never got confirmation back.
- E49 is a disagreement code — two separate signals about the door that should match and do not, which is often the clearest sign of a wiring fault rather than a dead switch.
Treat the number as an address inside the door circuit, not a single diagnosis. A part ordered for E41 will not fix E46, even though both codes stop the same washer at the same point in the cycle.

What causes the Electrolux washer E44 error?
Three things account for most E44 calls. The first is a worn or misaligned door strike — the part on the door itself that lines up with the switch on the frame — so the switch closes inconsistently even though the door looks shut. The second is a door switch that has started to fail intermittently, often after years of the door being slammed rather than pushed closed. The third is a connector at the switch or at the control board that has loosened or corroded, which produces exactly the kind of unreliable signal E44 is built to catch.
A less common but real cause is a wiring harness that has been pinched or chafed where it runs along the door frame hinge, which can develop an intermittent short that only shows up when the door is moved a certain way.
Can you fix the E44 error yourself?
A short list of checks is safe on any Electrolux front-load washer before calling for service:
- Close the door firmly and evenly from the center, not just at one corner, and listen for a single solid click rather than several soft ones.
- Power-cycle the washer. Unplug it or cut power at the breaker for two full minutes, then restart a cycle. If E44 clears and does not return for several loads, the fault was likely a momentary signal glitch rather than a failing part.
- Inspect the door strike and the gasket around it for a buildup of lint or detergent residue that keeps the door from seating exactly the same way every time.
- Check that nothing is caught in the door — a stray sock or a loose gasket fold can hold the door a fraction of an inch open without it looking open from outside.
If E44 comes back within the same load or the next one, the door-sensing circuit needs a technician’s multimeter on the switch and the harness, not another restart.
Is it safe to bypass the door switch?
No. The door switch and lock exist to keep the drum from spinning with the door open and to keep hot water and detergent inside a sealed tub. Any advice that suggests defeating or taping over the switch removes a safety interlock, not just an inconvenience, and it is not something we recommend or perform as a workaround. Stop before opening the control housing or disconnecting the door-lock assembly yourself — that is exactly where the mains wiring and the water-tight door seal both live.
When should you call for Electrolux washer repair?
Book a visit if E44 returns after a power cycle, if you hear the door lock motor cycling repeatedly without the code clearing, or if the door has ever needed extra force to close. Our technicians carry the multimeter checks for the whole E41–E49 family, so the exact link in the circuit gets identified before a part is ordered. We are an independent repair company, not a factory service arm, and we will tell you when a repair is not worth doing. Pricing starts from a diagnostic visit and we confirm the estimate before any work begins.
