TL;DR: Electrolux SpillSafe shelves are glass shelves with a sealed rim that contains spills. This glossary explains SpillSafe, Cool Zone and Perfect Temp drawers, IQ-Touch and Wave-Touch, PureAdvantage, ICON and Sabbath Mode.

Electrolux SpillSafe shelves are glass shelves with a raised, sealed edge that holds a spilled liquid on the shelf instead of letting it run down onto the food and shelves below. It is one of a dozen refrigerator terms that appear on Electrolux model names and spec sheets: Luxury-Glide Cool Zone drawer, Perfect Temp drawer, IQ-Touch and Wave-Touch controls, PureAdvantage filtration, ICON, dual ice makers and Sabbath Mode. This glossary explains each one in plain words, says which models we see them on, and notes what each means when something goes wrong, since a feature name is often the first clue to where a fault lives.

What are Electrolux SpillSafe shelves, and why do they matter?

A SpillSafe shelf is a tempered-glass shelf with a sealed raised edge around the perimeter. The edge turns the shelf into a shallow tray, so a tipped carton of milk or a tub of leftovers stays on that one level and does not drip through the gaps onto drawers and shelves below. You will see the name spelled both as SpillSafe and as Spill-Safe on our model pages, for models such as the EI23BC35KS, EI23BC30KS and EI23BC37SS.

Daily care follows from the design. Wipe a spill off the shelf at once, then lift the shelf and wipe the liner and rim. Do not run a glass shelf under hot water straight from a cold refrigerator, since a sudden swing in temperature can crack tempered glass. Our Electrolux refrigerator storage tips show how to use the shelf levels well.

What is the difference between a Cool Zone drawer and a Perfect Temp drawer?

Both are drawers in the fresh-food section that can be set to a different temperature than the rest. The Luxury-Glide Cool Zone, found on models like the EI23BC35KS and EI23BC60KS, is a sliding drawer meant for deli meats, cheese and beverages, and the name stresses the smooth glide of the drawer. The Perfect Temp drawer on models like the EI23BC82SS and the older EW23CS85KS serves the same purpose with its own control. In practice the difference matters little for buying; it matters for service, because each drawer has its own temperature sensor, damper or air path, and a drawer that runs warm points to that path, not to the whole refrigerator.

What do IQ-Touch and Wave-Touch mean?

They are names for the control panels. Wave-Touch is the earlier generation, seen on models like the EW28BS71IS and EW23BC87SS, and IQ-Touch is the later one, seen on models like the EI28BS56IS and EI23BC37SS. Both are touch panels, not knobs, which means a panel fault shows as unresponsive touches or a blank display, not a loose dial. Neither is a performance feature; the temperature is controlled the same way underneath. If the panel misbehaves, note whether the refrigerator itself is still cold. A cold refrigerator with a bad panel is a control problem, while a warm refrigerator with a normal panel is a cooling problem. Our guide to Electrolux error code letters helps you read what the display is saying.

What does PureAdvantage filtration do?

PureAdvantage is the water filter system used for the dispenser and the ice maker on models such as the EI28BS56IS, EI23BC65KS and EI23BC60KS. It is a cartridge on the water line, and like every cartridge it has a life. When it is used up, water flow slows, ice gets smaller or cloudy and the dispenser may taste flat. Our guide to how PureAdvantage works explains the cartridge, and the water filter replacement schedule sets out when to change it. If the dispenser gives little or no water after a fresh filter, our water dispenser guide covers the next steps.

What do ICON, counter-depth and dual ice makers mean?

  • ICON is the premium Electrolux tier. It includes built-in columns such as the E32AR85PQS all-refrigerator column and counter-depth French-door models in the Professional and Designer series, such as the E23BC78IPS and E23BC79SPS.
  • Counter-depth means the cabinet is shallow enough to sit nearly flush with the counters. It trades some capacity for a cleaner look, and the counter-depth French-door models on our site are 36 inches wide with about 22 cubic feet.
  • Dual ice makers, listed on the EI28BS65KS and EI23BC65KS, put one ice maker in the freezer and another in the door or the fresh-food section, so the refrigerator keeps ice available when one is busy.
  • ADA in a model note means the design is meant to satisfy accessibility height and reach guidance.

If you are shopping, our French-door refrigerator buying guide puts these terms into the context of a purchase.

What is Sabbath Mode, and is it a fault?

Sabbath Mode is a setting, not a fault. When on, it turns off the display, the interior lights and functions such as the dispenser and chimes, so nothing in the refrigerator is switched or lit while it is in use. Models such as the EW23BC87SS, with its Star-K certification, and the EI23BC37SS carry it. If a refrigerator seems oddly dark and silent, with a dead display and a working compressor, Sabbath Mode is the first thing to check, and the manual shows the way to exit it. It is a common cause of a call about a dead panel.

How do these features connect to faults?

The display alerts on these refrigerators are few. SY EF points at the evaporator fan, SH or OP at a sensor reading shorted or open, and PF at a power failure that has passed, and the display draws an S like a 5. Beyond those, problems are diagnosed by symptom: not cooling, no ice or water, frost, a warm fresh-food side with a cold freezer, or water from a clogged defrost drain. Our Electrolux refrigerator not cooling guide sets out the checks, and Electrolux refrigerator repair handles the visit. We are an independent service, so we explain the cause before anything is replaced.
