TL;DR: An Electrolux dryer burning smell means stop, switch off at the breaker and find the cause: lint on the heater, a blocked vent, an object in the cabinet or a slipping belt. A gas smell means leave and call the gas utility.

An Electrolux dryer burning smell is never something to run through another cycle: stop the dryer, switch it off at the breaker, and work out what you smell before using it again. The usual causes are lint on the heating parts, a clogged vent that lets the dryer overheat, a sock or small object that has fallen into the cabinet, or a belt slipping on the drum. A smell like rotten eggs or a gas leak is a different emergency, and it means leaving the house and calling the gas utility. This guide sorts the smells by type, shows what is safe to check yourself and explains when the dryer needs a technician, for models like the ELFG7637AT gas dryer and the electric ELFE7437AT.

Why does my Electrolux dryer smell like burning?

A dryer is a heater, a fan and a lot of fabric moving through hot air, so anything that gets in the wrong place can scorch. The most common reason is lint. Lint is fine, light and flammable, and it collects on the heater, in the cabinet and in the vent. When the exhaust path is partly blocked, the dryer cannot move heat out, the air inside runs hotter and any lint on the heater starts to toast. That gives the dusty, scorched smell people describe as burning popcorn or hot dust.

The second most common reason is a foreign object. A sock, a coin, an underwire or a loose button can drop past the drum seals into the cabinet, where it rests near the heater or rubs against the drum. The third is mechanical: a drum belt that is worn or slipping gives off a sharp hot-rubber smell, usually with a squeal or a thump as the drum turns.

What should you do first?

  1. Stop the dryer. Do not finish the cycle and do not restart it to see if the smell returns.
  2. Switch it off at the breaker or unplug it, then open the door and let the drum and the air inside cool.
  3. If you smell gas, leave. A gas dryer’s smell of rotten eggs means leaving the house, not touching switches, and calling the gas utility from outside.
  4. Look for smoke or sparks. If you see either, keep the door closed, and call emergency services.
  5. Remove the load once the drum is cool. Check that nothing in it is hot, melted or stained.

Then check the load itself. Anything that has had gasoline, cooking oil, paint thinner, cleaning solvent or similar on it can ignite in a dryer, even after washing. Wash such items several times and line-dry them, or discard them. Rubber-backed mats and foam items can melt. If one of these was in the dryer, that is probably your smell.

Lint that slips past the screen is what scorches first when airflow is restricted.

How do you check for lint and a blocked vent?

With the dryer off and cool, pull out the lint screen and clean it, then look into the slot where the screen sits for lint that has fallen past it. Slide the dryer away from the wall carefully, taking care not to pull on the gas line of a gas model, and look at the exhaust tube. A crushed, kinked or lint-packed tube is a classic cause of overheating. Check the outside hood, too: the flap should open freely, and nothing should block it. Our Electrolux dryer vent cleaning guide shows how to clean the duct, and the EF1 page describes the ventilation-blockage warning the dryer uses when airflow is poor.

A dryer that overheats may also trip its safety device, and that appears on the display as E2, which means the high-limit thermostat has tripped from excess heat. See our E2 page. A tripped high-limit is the dryer protecting itself, and it is often a downstream effect of restricted airflow, so clean the vent before anything else. If the dryer is also slow to dry, our guide to an Electrolux dryer that takes too long covers that symptom.

What does a hot-rubber or electrical smell mean?

A sharp rubber smell with a squeal points to the belt or a roller. Turn the drum by hand with the dryer off and unplugged: it should turn smoothly with firm resistance, not grind or jump. A belt that has slipped or worn thin, or a seized roller, is a repair for a technician, who can see inside the cabinet without risk. An electrical smell, like hot plastic or a fishy odor, is more serious. It can come from a loose connection at the terminal block, a motor overheating or an incorrect installation; our H4 page describes the wiring code the dryer uses for installation faults. Do not use a dryer that smells of electrical burning, and do not open the back panel with the power on.

Is a smell from a new dryer normal?

A light, brief odor in the first few cycles of a new machine is normal. It comes from protective coatings and manufacturing oils burning off the heater. It should fade within a few loads, and it should smell faintly of warm metal, not of scorched lint, plastic or smoke. Run a first cycle on empty at a high heat setting as the manual allows, with the room ventilated. If a new dryer still smells strongly after several cycles, stop using it and have it checked.

How do you prevent it from happening again?

  • Clean the lint screen before every load and wash it now and then to remove softener film.
  • Have the whole vent run cleaned at least once a year, more often with a long or bent run.
  • Never dry items soaked with flammable liquids or oils.
  • Empty pockets, and keep small items in a mesh bag.
  • Do not overload the drum, since a packed load restricts airflow and raises the heat.

Our Electrolux dryer error codes guide explains the codes you may see along the way, and how Predictive Dry works shows how the dryer senses heat and moisture.

When should you call a technician?

Call when the smell returns after you have cleaned the screen and the vent, when it smells of rubber or plastic, when the dryer shows E2 again, or whenever there is smoke or sparks. Our Electrolux dryer repair service can inspect the heater, belt and wiring, and we are an independent service, so we will tell you plainly whether the cure is a cleaning or a part. You can book a visit and describe the smell.

Frequently asked questions
Is it safe to use my dryer if it smells like burning?
No. Stop it, switch it off at the breaker, let it cool, and find the cause before using it again. A smell of gas means leaving the house and calling the gas utility.
Why does my dryer smell like hot dust?
Lint is probably toasting on the heater, often because a blocked vent lets the dryer run hot. Clean the lint screen and the vent run before the next load.
Can a dryer start a fire from lint?
Yes. Lint is flammable, and restricted airflow raises the heat. Clean the screen every load and the vent at least once a year.
When should I call a technician?
Call if the smell returns after cleaning, if it smells of rubber or electrical burning, or if the dryer shows E2 again. You can book a visit with the model number ready.
